2: How does Medicaid work?
Medicaid is designed to help cover the cost of nursing home care for people with limited assets. If eligible for Medicaid, it will pay a set amount each month to the nursing facility. Your contribution will be a designated amount of your social security and/or pension. This is called Patient Resource Payment and is established by Medicaid based on your income.
- Example: Your total income, depending on income source such as social security and pension combine for a total of $730 a month. You keep $40.00. Subtract that from the original $730.00 amount. That total is $690.00 and is your patient resource amount due to the nursing facility billing office each month.
- $40.00 is for your personal needs.
- Medicaid has specific guidelines for number of days you may be away from the facility.
- We will be happy to provide you a contact person at the local Medicaid office to assist you with application process and to answer specific questions.
